Drink That Coffee

A new study shows that people who drink coffee may live longer.  So, as I write this, I am sipping on the fountain of youth.   The researchers were able to tease this nugget out after they first realized that  coffee drinkers were more likely to die at any given time.   That is when they…

Fake Pig Ears

China, with its history of poor oversight, has once again been found to have produced something fraudulent.  I blogged so many stories over the years about this trend it is getting boring already.  Whether it is fake ED meds, cadmium in toys, or  flawed medical trials, they seem to keep outdoing themselves.   The newest item…

Rx Without A Doctor

In the continuing saga of physician disrespect, the FDA is looking at more ways for patients to get prescriptions without seeing a doctor.   This is the same country where many states don’t allow doctors to do telemedicine across state lines.  So, in the latter case, doctors can’t give prescriptions but patients would be able…

Diet Laws

I am all for improving America’s diet.  I just don’t think the government needs to be so heavily involved.  As a physician, it should be us giving the advice but I admit that I don’t think we have all the right answers yet.   Are grains the problem?  Has fat been maligned for the wrong…

Healthcare Going To The Dogs

Here is the kind of orientation video that hospital administrators are now showing to their employees.   There is a longer video of it here:

As one of my readers said (who sent this in):

  • These all seem to be systems failures at a corporate hospital run by people not involved in the care of the patients.
  • It seems the cash-based model run by the veterinarian allows her to hire and retain staff with the right attitudes who are happy to work in a pleasant work environment
  • That call back by the vet was a nice touch, is the hospital going to pay the doctors’ additional hours to do the same or are you just sticking to your guns on the hourly/annual wage with no unapproved “overtime”?

Fruit Roll-Ups

Maerenn Jepsen, a General Mills spokeswoman, said, “We stand behind our products, and we stand behind the accuracy of the labeling of those products”.  And that is why the lawsuit continues in California.   The person suing them believes the company is being untruthful when they state the Fruit Roll-Ups are healthful and natural, rather than a…

Grand-Aide

You got to love when a cardiologist working at a medical school has an epiphany on how to fix the primary care shortage.   His concept is simple.   Create a position called Grand-Aides.    Who they are?   Well, students getting a grand-aide certificate would do coursework that “covers protocols for 26 primary care conditions,…

Medical Tourism Heating Up

I have always been a fan of medical tourism.   If any country wants to hire me as their “medical” ambassador, just give me a call.  Why?  The bottom line is that if the doctors are good and the price is much cheaper then they deserve the business.  And what a business it is. Nearly three…
