Clinical Face Time Now 29%
Here is what the job of being a physician has come to:
- During office hours, physicians spent 27% of their time providing direct clinical face time to patients
- Physicians also spend almost 50% of their time on electronic health records and desk work during the day in addition to an extra 1 to 2 hours each night during their personal time
- Fifty-four percent of U.S. physicians experience some sign of burnout, an increase from 46% in 3 years
We let this happen. Now we need a revolution to take it back. Direct Primary Care is that revolution!
And the study doesn’t even mention how much of that 29% is inauthentic, ie not what either the patient or the doctor is concerned about, like stuff to fulfill 1995 guidelines for reimbursement or all the new crap.
That could be me… Right down to the carpal-tunnel-inducing position of the keyboard, 15 inch VGA monitor and non height adjustable stool. Do you think our CEO suffers with such a setup – get real. She uses a Mac with an ergonomic keyboard drawer along with a 27 inch monitor and Aero chair.
It always amazes me that healthcare always has the worst ergonomics! You can tell from EMR design that the programmers have no idea what we do, and from workspace design that people think we must just stand around exam tables and beds all the time like they do on TV.
Now there’s an ergonomic workspace! Except not.
Not sure if that exam room wallpaper is the result or the cause of physician burnout.
