I love this.
The complete episode is on” Penn and Teller Bullsh*t” on line at tv.com
The main anti-vaccination proponent is Jay Gordon MD a pediatrician in LA who apparently went over to the “dark side ” years ago w/ the help of Jenny McCarthy.
Wow. Can they come talk to some of my patients?
But it still wouldn’t help – even if they were standing there in the exam room throwing yellow balls and howling reason. Or the patient panicked about Ebola virus, but unwilling to get a ‘flu shot.
One of the measures of the integrity of a civilization is how it treats ignorance. In some places, they look to experienced professionals for gentle, accurate guidance on the handling of reality.
Not here in America! Better to have tens of thousands of children be crippled every year, in a way that we can palm it off to “the will of Al’lah” or God’s way, or some sort of blasphemous pointing of the fingers – than to save one child’s life. We are so enamored of our own cowardice and irrationality that most of us will not lift a finger, if we can be blamed for something. And medicine hurtles at relativistic speed towards the New Dark Ages, where people will die without anyone daring to try to save them.
If there is any theology to be gleaned from Penn & Teller (as I understand, atheists) is the reasonable assertion that “Jesus is coming, and boy, is He pissed!” That, we can agree on. Google “millstone” in the New Testament, and hear the words of someone quite like Penn Jillette.
