So agree that the system is abused, both govt and private workman’s comp. Even beyond that, some patients have a psychologic need to have an illness.
A local physician who did complimentary medicine told the following story:
She had two patients with Lupus and one was doing well and the other was not. She pulled into the parking lot one day, and met up with the patient who was not doing well. The license plate on her car said “LUPUS”. Turns out she had become her disease.

Great quote! It is sooooo true! So many of my patients GLORY in their infirmaties. Which is so weird(i before e except after c-weird, huh?). Part of it is caused by our government. Many of these people glory in their infirmaties because they want a handout from the government via Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security. Some want a handout from Workman’s Comp. I had one patient with a Workman’s Comp. injury who also had diabetes. When I told him some exercise would improve his out of control diabetes, he replied “If I do that, I will lose about $600,000 I’m supposed to get from Workman’s Comp.” Clearly he was more interested in robbing Work Comp. than in being healthy. Few are so bold to say that, but many have the same attitude I can tell. On the opposite end of the problem, I just saw a 90 year old who is healthier than most of my 40-50 year old patients. Mentally sharp, too. What is her secret? She says she has worked hard all of her life, never smoked and never drank alcohol.
