Ridiculous Study of the Week: Shaving Pubic Hair

The headline Shaving pubic hair related to STIs: study was enough to sucker me in.  It goes on to say that:

A new study done at the University of California—San Francisco reports that people who regularly groom their pubic hair are 75% more likely to develop a sexually transmitted infection than non-groomers.

Questions hit my brain immediately.

  1. Why was money spent studying this?
  2. Why did they use a survey instead of just tracking backwards from proven STD cases and seeing if they shaved?
  3. How could they come up with the conclusion that “the act of shaving may create ‘epidermal microtears’ that might allow transmission of bacteria or viruses like HPV?”

No one ever sees a case of crabs or pubic lice anymore. There used to be great jokes about this ailment but, alas, they are gone.  Shaving stopped that.  More importantly,  isn’t it just obvious that “shavers” have more sex, which leads to higher cases of STDs?  This brings me back to the my first question, why was money spent studying this?
