Single-Payer Not Going to Happen
California is giving their best Vermont (big fail) imitation at attempting to create a single-payer system for healthcare. It will never happen. Why? The cost would be $400 billion. Their total budget now is…drumroll please…$200 billion. So, in effect, this would double their budget. This is dead on arrival.
We need a free market plan that brings prices down. We don’t need a plan that doubles the population’s taxes and does nothing to contain the cost.
If doctors could own the health insurance industry, health care cost would be half and doctors incomes and services to patients double. There would be money left over to take care of the uninsured. The problem here is the greed of corporations that provide no care but are intertwined into the delivery of services as a malignant tumor. M. Pappolla MD, PhD
Here’s the bottom line. There isn’t going to be single-payer unless taxes are raised to pay for it. Obama set up what amounted to an impossible set of guidelines in order to sell the ACA as giving people something for nothing. To meet those guidelines the Democrats fudged projections and made assumptions that could never be true. Neither the ACA or the AHCA does anything to control health care spending. And Lord knows the GOP isn’t going to raise taxes.
When I say raise taxes I mean raise them on everybody, not just the 1%. There isn’t enough money in the 1% to pay for it, plus if we’re going to have a shared benefit we should have a shared sacrifice. Until there are politicians willing to make hard decisions and speak honestly this whole single payer thing is BS and our health care system will continue to be a mess.
