THC in Babies
In a study in the journal Clinical Biochemistry, urine samples of babies that contained minute amounts of any of five baby soaps — Johnson & Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash, J&J Bedtime Bath, CVS Night-Time Baby Bath, Aveeno Soothing Relief Creamy Wash and Aveeno Wash Shampoo — gave a positive result for THC. These soaps are used to wash babies shortly after birth and may cause the baby to test positive for marijuana on some newborn screening tests. This would set in a motion a whole set of social service alarms and actions. The researchers are not sure what causes the soaps to turn the test positive but it may be that there are some similar structures to THC in them. So, to summarize, it is possible that some babies who were found to have positive marijuana tests could have them due to the soap being used to wash them or due to the fact that their mom was smoking weed. These tests are mostly done on high risk moms who did not receive prenatal care. In the future, the marijuana test will now need to be reconfirmed (more expense) which will ultimately show that, well, the mom was probably smoking weed.
