Everybody’s Gotta Watch Everybody Else

In an effort to change doctors into something else,  the new team-based care approach is removing doctors from their evil offices and into open spaces.  See this nugget from Healthcare Design:

To answer the trend of physicians shifting from independent practices to salaried employees of larger healthcare systems, the built environment is evolving, particularly by moving doctors out of private offices and into more open workspaces as a foundation for changing processes and opening lines of communication and collaboration, which are essential to this approach to care.

See what a great move signing on with hospitals has been?  Do you see what we have become?   It reminds me of the movie Casino (video clip above):

Ace Rothstein: [voice-over] In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.

Now my question to you all is, who is the eye-in-the-sky for the healthcare system?

Not to worry, Stella – the Eye in the Sky will be recording the physician/patient interactions by videotaping them all into the patient record by the end of 2017. You can bet yer hat on it.

A person has to wonder if cubicles will be acceptable to patients as a place to discuss private matters with their physician. And how HIPAA will regard the arrangement, now that semiprivate hospital rooms are becoming obsolete.
