Ridiculous Study of the Week: Rumination and Fibromyalgia

Here is the title of a recent medical article I was click baited into:

Rumination Worsens Fibromyalgia Symptoms

—Researchers set out to explore the relationships between rumination, stress levels, and the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Right off the bat, they make it seem as if these guys were Ferdinand Magellan trying to successfully explore and circumnavigate the world.

Here are the take-home points from this groundbreaking study:

  • Stress can modulate and predict the clinical characteristics of fibromyalgia.
  • Rumination, which involves repetitive, intrusive, and uncontrollable focus on negative past events, can induce a stress response.
  • High levels of rumination correlate strongly with stress in patients with fibromyalgia, and are associated with worse clinical symptoms.

So…if you think about your pain all the time you will feel it more?

Uh..ya think?
