Unfortunately, the problem is real. I have many patients with this issue and some of them are very physically agile. Even in freezing temperatures, they will literally run at high speed out an open door.
Local police departments have bracelets to allow tracking. They are locked and very durable. Yet, some of my patients with dementia are still adept at trying to cut them off.

The devices have been around almost a decade and local police departments can set up families. I don’t think there is even a charge because it saves so much effort when someone with dementia vanishes into the woods. Just a couple of months ago, there was a massive hunt in our area for someone who did not have the bracelet and wandered away. They found her huddled up in a garden shed 36 hours later, thankfully in relatively good shape.
