Global Warming Saves Lives
The Lancet just published a report warning of impending death and destruction from unchecked global warming. The authors focused on the effect of heat waves on older and vulnerable populations. Yet, nowhere in the 43 page manifesto did they find room to mention a previous empirical study from the same prestigious journal that showed cold weather kills 20 times more people than warm weather.
Indeed, Science Daily reported on a 2015 study in the Lancet that “analyzed over 74 million deaths between 1985 and 2012 in 13 countries with a wide range of climates, from cold to subtropical…Of all deaths caused by non-optimal temperatures, Cold was responsible for the majority of these deaths (7.29% of all deaths), while just 0.42% of all deaths were attributable to heat.
According to Dr Gasparrini, ‘Current public-health policies focus almost exclusively on minimizing the health consequences of heat waves. Our findings suggest that these measures need to be refocused and extended to take account of a whole range of effects associated with temperature.’”
The Lancet study supported earlier reports that winter is deadlier than summer in the United States. A report released by the National Center for Health Statistics, based on death certificate data from 2006-10, found that about 2,000 U.S. residents died each year from weather-related causes of death. 63% of these deaths were attributed to exposure to excessive natural cold, hypothermia or both, while about 31% of these deaths were attributed to exposure to heat.
The collective memory of humankind is short. One the worst periods for humanity was the Little Ice Age which resulted in famine and the spread of Plague throughout Europe.
Maybe a little warmth is not such a bad thing.
Well of course they had to change the name to “climate change” because stupid naysayers pointed to every snowstorm as “proof” the world wasn’t getting warmer. And death by freezing will be a huge problem once things get bad enough for civilization to start falling apart and even less people have adequate heating.
It really bothers me when people who should be able to understand how complex systems can be due to their knowledge of biology don’t get how perturbing one thing can cause sometimes unpredictable chaos, the same way a disease or poisoning can overcome your homeostasis enough to cause morbidity or mortality, fast or slow. Or that Time or Newsweek running a science story that turns out to be wrongheaded means the vast majority of experts agreeing on something for decades must be wrong.
Right On MC, RN, you’re correct about the prior “global warming” and now “climate change” scare being a hidden agenda for getting $$$, but also for control which plays into the UN’s Agenda 20/30 plans to urbanize and GREATLY reduce earth’s population. Climate has been cycling for eons and to be fair, the honest climate scientists say that our carbon emissions do have a very small effect on climate but it is a fraction of a percent and is :. insignificant.
Remember the mini ice age in 1976-1977 (or was it 1978). Time magazine and Newsweek talked about the new ice age coming. I agree that we need to control pollution of the air, sea and water. Climate on earth involves volcanic explosions (the summer that was a winter 150 years ago). wobbling of earth on its axis and the flipping of the electromagnetic fields, solar storms, etc.
Nice post, thanks! I find global warming an interesting subject.
Weather has always gone through cycles of climate change. There have always been natural disasters, I did my nursing clinicals at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston years ago. I remember a nun came to talk to us about the 1900 Great Galveston hurricane which claimed between 6,000 and 12,000 lives. ‘Shit Happens’!
Love how these doomsayers used to refer to ‘Global Warming’ when talking about extreme weather changes. Since temperatures haven’t really gone up much, they now refer to ‘Climate Change’.
It’s a global hysteria created for the sole purpose of making lots of money for Leftist politicians and large corporations. And, as usual, lucky taxpayers get to choke up the money to ‘Fight Climate Change’. Give me a break!
Thank you. You might be interested in this book about the Galveston Hurricane. https://www.amazon.com/Isaacs-Storm-Deadliest-Hurricane-History/dp/0375708278 Erik Larson has written a number of 100% factual books that read like novels. Honestly, the Galveston one is not his best, but interesting nonetheless.
Excellent! I’ll def get this book. I’m quite a history buff, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy this book. Thanks Russell!
Embrace Global Warming!

And don’t forget about secondary cold-weather causes of death:
You get a whole lot more car accidents on ice thaan in the rain, and a whole lot more heart attacks shoveling snow than pumping out the basement.
