I think we need a NO SHIT, SHERLOCK category for this blog because this one would fit right in:
Newborns in the U.S. are much more likely to survive a hospital delivery than a planned home birth, regardless of how qualified the attending midwife may be, a new study suggests.
Researchers looked at mortality rates within 30 days of birth for newborns who were delivered by midwives, either at home or in a hospital, between 2010 and 2017.
Dr. Amos Grunebaum and colleagues found that on average, nearly 14 newborns per 10,000 live births died following planned home births – more than four times the rate for babies born in hospitals.
Tell me how many doctors do home births again? Yeah, none. Well, here is why. There is a 400% increase in deaths for this “practice”! OMG.
So here are some points that we have concluded here:
- One, we are sure an OBGYN would be a better choice if you did a home birth because TRAINING and EDUCATION MATTERS!
- Two, you wouldn’t get an OBGYN to do a home birth. You know why? Because they are not f&cking idiots.

Yeah I’m reminded of a home birth gone bad in the Peoria area. Mom had a difficult home birth 45 minutes away from the hospital. Baby boy was unresponsive upon delivery and midwife called the ambulance and started resuscitative efforts. Family members prayed to the venerable Fulton Sheen to intervene. Resuscitation continued at the hospital and they brought the kid back after something like 1hr and 15 minutes. Surely the kid would be mentally handicapped?
The docs prepared the family for a poor outcome but the boy is now about 10 years old and totally normal. It’s considered a miracle. The problem with miracles is sometimes the answer is, “No.”
I wonder what the outcome would have been if the mom delivered in the hospital.
I’m with you guys on this one. I think home deliveries are unsafe. Sure if a multip has enough room for a Mack truck to pass through the risk is probably limited but like Pat mentions the shoulder dystocia situation, it’s best to be in a hospital equipped to deal with it.
Underscores the hilarious worthlessness of at-home doulas, midwives, shamans, witch doctors, and obstetric jacuzzi purveyors.
When there is an unyielding shoulder dystocia, or abnormal fetal decels, the woman and baby need an OB at the bedside.
What would you want for your family member?
All over the globe, 40% of women travel to hospitals-many of them desperately poor and who travel great distances across dangerous terrain-so that they can birth in a hospital, albeit primitive ones.

Preaching to the choir, but I do hope it gets out to midwives,who should be supervised by an OBGYN physician in the Hospital,with all the services ready/available for whatever may happen..
