Good News! Insurers are Getting Bigger!
Have you heard? Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina are combining with the Oregon-based insurer Cambia Health Solutions, and the two companies would together cover around six million people and have about $16 billion in combined revenue. Here was what one of the Blue Cross CEO’s said:
“We have to do something different to make health care better, simpler, and more affordable for the people we serve,” Conway said in a statement. “By sharing resources, innovations, and best-in-class services we can fundamentally transform the way individuals and families experience the health care system.”
I actually spit out my coffee laughing at that! Wow. I only hope someone looks back at this quote in 2 years and keeps them accountable.
It’ll never happen.

Translation: We have to do something to give the illusion that we are making the system better, but still making a killing off you people.
Doug, I lost my coffee too!
But then I realized that whenever insurance companies make a move, it is only “to serve patients better”. Selfless.
Recently, our regional dental insurance company, Dental Care Plus, started by we dentists in Cincinnati to combat the onslaught of PPOs and DMOs, just sold out to a giant conglomerate out of Boston, DentaQuest. Why? To serve us better.
It turned my stomach yesterday when I got the letter.
