Why? We are taught to instinctively hide under the veil of mediocrity. Enough small men and women with indistinguishable opinions comfort each other by their interchangeability. Everyone can indulge in the luxury of vanity – if we are all unanimous, we are all correct. Very good then – but why are you cowering together?
If there is not enough bravery or reason for a man to hew out of raw material his own and private opinion, there is instead a herd of mindless animals – moving this way and that, only wishing not to stand out, to be far from the comforting center of the herd.
Enough pride, alloyed with enough ignorance and vain self-certainty, makes for a majority – a conventional wisdom, the oxymoron states. So many of us live a life without substance or identity, clustering about them the comforting opinions of the majority, hoping never to awaken and become lonely.
It is the emptiness of the majority, the vacuity of the masses, the solitude of the herd that they live their lives, sleepwalking. For such an ignoble purpose – is that all we are here for?
