Harvard Study: Medical Marijuana is a Scam
The Harvard Gazette reported on a recent well-designed study. Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial of marijuana used for medical purposes and found that those getting a weed card had twice the incidence of substance use disorders and no improvement in their medical conditions, except that they slept more.
“There have been many claims about the benefits of medical marijuana for treating pain, insomnia, anxiety, and depression, without sound scientific evidence to support them,” says lead author Jodi Gilman, with the Center for Addiction Medicine at MGH. “In this first study of patients randomized to obtain medical marijuana cards, we learned there can be negative consequences to using cannabis for medical purposes. People with pain, anxiety or depression symptoms failed to report any improvements, though those with insomnia experienced improved sleep.” Particularly disturbing to Gilman was the fact individuals with symptoms of anxiety or depression — the most common conditions for which medical cannabis is sought — were most vulnerable to developing cannabis use disorder.
Marijuana has been recommended for conditions from autism to xerosis despite the lack of scientifically valid trials. As The Cleveland Clinic explained, “A medication is a drug that has endured extensive clinical trials, public hearings and approval by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Medications are tested for safety and efficacy. They are closely regulated, from production to distribution. They are accurately dosed, down to the milligram. Medical marijuana is none of those things.”
Whether or not to legalize recreational marijuana is an opinion. The is no right or wrong answer. On the other hand, whether or not marijuana is a medicine has a definitive answer. Randomized controlled trials will show whether marijuana is safe and effective. Until these trials are done, there is no justification for the thousands of medical pot shops across the country.
This is a multi-billion dollar business. Prohibition has ended. Lobbying has had the intended effect. Medical marijuana is basically a dose-yourself business……I think you can keep dosing yourself until you fall asleep. I would not begrudge a cancer/terminal illness patient. But you just have to wonder around these parts when you see signs saying “we guarantee you medical approval or your money back”. So basically any condition qualifies- did you ever see your pet dog or cat die, do you have any kind of anxiety or trouble sleeping, do you ever worry about anything, ever get stressed out? The scary thing is that I know so many people with medical marijuana cards. The guy in the car next to you who just swerved in your lane???? The person driving your kids to school???
And of course, the medical marijuana business is the foot in the door to the recreational business. So everyone, please get ready for the new world order. Why are humans so prone to drug dependency? Would that be a question for a psychiatrist? So now when John Q Public has to figure out how much money he needs to live on, he needs rent, food, and dope money. The more choices, the more stress. AND PATIENTS WANT TO KNOW IF THEIR DRUG INSURANCE COVERS MEDICAL POT!!!!!!!!

We went through this, chapter and verst, with alcohol during Prohibition.
https://prohibition.osu.edu/american-prohibition-1920/medicinal-alcohol
In the run-up to Prohibition, the gutless wonders at the AMA declared alcohol had no medical use except as a solvent or disinfectant.
In Prohibition years, the AMA suddenly decided that alcohol DID have medical value, when “prescribed” by a physician (for a fee), and a whole elaborate system of medical alcohol prescriptions were created. The doctors went through the mental masturbation of whether the patient would benefit from gin or whisky or whatever. Calling whiskey, what was it, “spiritus frumenti” to sound smart, and prescribing the stuff in gills and drams and units I’ve heard about but never used.
It all evaporated when Prohibition was repealed, as there was no need for the scam anymore.
I agree that the whole “medical” approach was a scam from the start, the camel’s nose under the tent
I also think that the ‘herb’ can be vastly preferable in many chronic pain patients to opioids, and I think physicians should feel as free to recommend it as anything else.
I also think we that anyone should be able this grow it on the porch like tomatoes, and enjoy it all they like. And that there should be stiff criminal penalties for giving/selling it to minors.
