Were You Recognized Yesterday for Doctor’s Day?
[poll id=”2″]
Yesterday was Doctor’s Day. When I first started in medicine, working for a hospital, there used to be luncheons for doctors. Then it became a small gift. Then maybe a card and meal discount. Not longer after it was an email. Finally, there was nothing.
Today I work for myself but my assistant got me a Walt Disney World Doctor’s Day pin.
What did you get?
Please answer the above poll so I can see what is going on out there in the world.
I will spread the results around so please get other docs to click a response as well. Make this viral to show the world how great or how poorly we are treated.

Nothing this year. My favorite in the past was a three year run of finger nail clippers in a genuine fake leatherette pouch embossed with the hospital name. I guess they ordered too many the first year and it took 2 more years to use up the stock pile.
Independent FP. I got an invite to a meal, that I would have to take time away from seeing patients to attend. I got an email from the local hospital, but it was just a reminder that I need to pay hospital dues.
I saw it was Dr.s day, but since I have not gotten any recognition for years, I did not expect any this year. I was not dissapointed.
WE got a thank you card signed by administrators and a “tileMate” (a device that helps you find your keys and phone). I’m guessing they got a hefty discount on a bulk purchase, and it probably cost them $1 each. Not impressed
No e-mail, No poster on the wall (in contrast to what is done for nurses, etc.)
One of the hospitals had a nice breakfast and gave out a token gift (a car trunk organizer with the hospital’s logo). The other hospital (now owned by Montefiore) nada. My large group: an email, that’s it.
Our rural critical access hospital made posters with a basketball jersey with our names on it and a number “1”. Staff signed them (oversized card). Our staff is worked to death so they had little time to offer the medical staff of four physicians best wishes.
I might get a paperweight from my health clinic employer like last year.
Years ago, a previous hospital had a catered breakfast, neck and shoulder massages from the rehab department’s massage therapist, and PING branded wind breakers with the hospital logo.
Got a thank you Email from the State Medical Board. Just underneath that was a note that physicians may now begin to apply for a certificate to recommend medical marijuana. Far out Dude!
We got a nice luncheon, and a small portable USB phone charger.
I’m 1/2-time in my DPC and 1/2-time employed by the local family medicine residency. Our local hospital recognizes us every year with a catered special meal in Doctor’s Dining and a gift ( a bbq set this year). The residency gives us a gift too. I guess we are still appreciated here.
As long as patients, hospitals, insurance companies, and the government coordinate and collude to force me to prove myself along the lines of MOC, yearly re-licensure, down-coding, quality markers, the threat of lawsuit, groundless complaints, and all the other bullshit and threats that outline and define this profession, expressions of false gratitude only leave me angrier. Due respect, but I don’t buy superfluous expressions of “Happy Doctor’s Day (sucker)”. Just make sure the check is signed.
Got emails from the AAFP, the state medical society, the county medical society, the hospital CEO, and my sister (a psychiatrist). The hospital (non-profit acquired by for-profit parent) just reinstated Doctors’ Day event with fancy reception and awards/recognition of colleagues’ milestones
Our group is independent. Our staff brought a nice breakfast potluck which was delicious. The local hospital sent us a card indicating that they had donated money to a local food bank on our behalf so essentially they gave Themselves a tax deduction to recognize us for doctors day!
My sister who is an OT sent me an email. FYI National OT MONTH starts tomorrow????
Our NP (whom Corporate has been leaning on for diminished productivity) came by and said thanks and happy doctor’s day.
Locum companies I work with, and local clinical society sent small gifts and cards. I did feel appreciated. Hospital offered free breakfast – I did not go, since my ED shift ended much earlier before breakfast posted time.
My husband and I are independent. No one at work knew. My husband got a “sincere” email from Healthgrades and a discount from a medical text book company… I posted on Facebook and other doctors acknowledged that day. That’s about it.
SP
Independent thank goodness. Our nurse practioner, our state medical association and our EMR company all sent email greetings. The hospital (you know, the one that admits most of our patients and gets most of our imaging business) ….othing but crickets. And they by golly well have my email.
My corporate office arranged for appetizers and booze after work. I didn’t go. The hospital put a popcorn machine with rancid oil in the doctor’s lounge for a treat. I felt special
Self employed but admitting privileges at local hospital. Bought myself a latte and chocolate croissant but crickets from the hospital this year!
I’m an independent community doctor in a small town with one hospital. I don’t admit but they get all my business. I got a card in the mail with a small note and a coupon for a free car wash.
Hey, I got a free car wash TOO!!!
…but from another network, not my employer
My reward was another day on the assembly line chained to the computer
Gotta go now….charts to finish
No
(Sorry about previous post- hit wrong button on my phone)
It used to be a carnation or a pin.
Now, it was an email offering fruit in the physisicians’ lounge ( I don’t use that lounge as I own my own offices in the attached Drs’ office building).
Two of my RN friends wished me Happy Doctors Day.
So At least it wasn’t totally ignored.
We’re one of the last private family practices in the area, and the only one still seeing patients in the hospital. A couple nurses and support staff said “Happy Doctor’s Day.” But I always feel appreciated by them, I think because we still do care for and more importantly about our patients. Nothing from the administration, of course, but I am kind of a burr under their saddle.
I got an email that was in a package with 3 other nasty insulting administrative emails.
We were allowed the opportunity to walk half way across the hospital ( I’m an ER doc, so leaving duties) for a FREE SMALL Coffee.
Yeah. Appreciation?
Just two emails- one from the AMA for “Happy Doctors Day” (along with an invitation to renew my membership as I dropped them- worthless organization!), another from my state medical society. That’s it, nothing else.
A card from my hospital donating to a substance abuse organization.
I’m the employer, so didn’t answer the survey. But my medical assistant brought me coffee, banana nut bread, an orchid, and a hug!
