Thing is,
One out of nine cowboys was black. At least that was the number I was taught. It may be higher.
Racism in the Western towns. Sheriff Bart arriving in town, and the guns cocking. Read about Theodore Roosevelt in Butte Montana in 1903. If the [colored] soldiers are good enough to fight beside him [in Cuba] they deserve……..”a square deal in civil life”. The President was received about as badly as Sheriff Bart with those remarks.
I saw cavalry helmets with the German Pickelhaube at the Bridger Museum.
Contemporary accounts of cowboys eating beans and breaking wind. Not allowed in the genteel East.
Corrupt politicians.
And, of course, shady real estate deals around the railroads.
I’ve long been of the opinion that Mel Brooks got more right about the American West, doing a farce, than all of Hollywood trying to play it straight.
