How are a nude beach and Electronic Medical Records alike? The idea of them sounds appealing, but when you actually see them in action, they are pretty ugly!

Tonight my emr is undergoing a major update, planned for months. I plan on it not working for days and days. It’s just how IT people justify their existence- by occasionally flexing their diminutive muscles.

The Franciscan Healthcare system (Tacoma WA) and Virginia Mason system (Seattle), merged a while ago. The two centers also run a number of affiliated community hospitals.
The Franciscan’s EMR system got hacked. Ransomware. The EMR was down for about three weeks. Imagine that, three weeks flying blind.

You can run a hospital without the EMR, but everything slows down considerably when you can’t check old records. Maybe you order extra tests to be sure. “Throughput” is longer on wards and in ER. Problem is, the patients continue to arrive at the same rate. So St. Michael Hospital (Silverdale WA) backs up into waiting area, until overwhelmed ER nurse calls 911.

(also reflects a poorly run Emergency Department by some reports)

AND……St. Michael Silverdale Emergency Department is so overcrowded, in addition, because there is no Emergency Department in any hospital in the adjacent City of Bremerton, a city of about 44,000.
“Temporary” closing reported in 2021.

Still closed as of late 2022, maybe will open in 2024.

Closure of Emergency Department at a hospital in a city of 44,000, attributed to, I dunno, The Great Resignation, The Supply Chain, Vladmir Putin, the usual excuses for people not doing their jobs.
