Friday Funny: How Thin Would This Book Be?
I love it when the Ivory Tower docs in major institutions discuss fixing burnout. They literally have never worked a day in the system and yet they pontificate and bloviate bullshit.
But the conundrum is this: This book could be thousands of pages of garbage or a one-page synopsis admitting they know nothing. What do you think?
Several years ago at a well-attended lecture series in my city the renowned Harvard physician and writer Dr. Atul Gawande spoke about the state of medicine in the U.S. and responded to a few written questions afterwards. One was from a female practitioner who admitted to her own burn-out related to all the usual factors. His answer from the Ivory Tower? Basically, suck it up and hang in there. Of course, I immediately lost all respect for him.
I’m in trouble. Our Director scheduled an impromptu zoom meet&greet during lunch. Instead, I’m getting lunch rather than getting met & gret. If I get hypoglycemic I might start telling the truth.
Typically insightful commentary from the AMA’s VP of Professional Satisfaction:
‘How do we change health system organizational culture? One kind conversation at a time. Something as simple as “Somethings been troubling him, I should ask”. ‘
Just what administrators want to hear – they don’t have to change anything.
if it was truthful, it would start with a sentence, “it is critical that we save our physicians that are burning out and to keep them working because we are riding them like horses and if they burn out we might actually have to work.”
Hospital administrators are taking some pointers from pre-war plantation owners: don’t beat your slaves too hard, as they’re expensive to replace.
it could be a one sentence book. “Go into administration.”
I just read the AAFP website and the twitter feed of AMA’s Christine Sinsky for a never-ending flow of worthless BS on the subject.
