Founder of Generic Drug Maker Murdered
He also feared retaliation from rivals. “The branded drug companies hate us,” he said in an interview excerpted in a 2001 book by Jeffrey Robinson. “They have private investigators on us all the time. The thought once came to my mind, why didn’t they just hire someone to knock me off?”
Dr. Sherman, 75 years old, and his wife, Honey, 70, were found dead in mysterious circumstances at their Toronto mansion Dec. 15. The police have said they died of “ligature neck compression,” a type of strangulation. The deaths remain under investigation.
Could Big Pharm have knocked him off? It is kind of weird. The tragedy was first publicized as a murder-suicide but now the police are calling it a homicide. Therefore it was made to look like a murder-suicide, which means it was done by professionals. It was a hit. Hmmmm. I don’t want to point fingers and I am not a conspiracy, buff but I don’t trust anyone. Those with power don’t like the little guys pushing back.
addendum: There’s a recent and widely reported comprehensive study here pointing out if the government covered drugs and negotiated the price we’d all save lots of money, even the government as they cover the poor and lower middle class pretty well and other countries do quite well with it as proof. Not much movement politically despite medical and economic consensus and a population that feels entitled to such things. This could turn into a very interesting story.
His generic company was under investigation. Generic competition is poor here as in the States, and prices unacceptably high. This couple lived in the richest part of Toronto and were well respected among the Canadian Establishment for lots of charity funding, and I would guess also political funding. The Prime Minister commented soon after the murder and sounded like a friend, shaken. The Canadian press has dropped coverage as best I can tell, after the first few days. This is the first I’m hearing of the change in the investigators assessment, mostly we just heard about how family and friends saw no reason to suspect suicide and were insulted by the initial assumption. The only news I’ve heard recently on Apotex, their company, is that the cost of PrEP for HIV was only reduced to 700 and something per month when it went generic.
