The Lockdown Olympics

Beijing’s port city, Tianjin, ordered a second round of COVID-19 testing on all 14 million residents Wednesday following the discovery of 97 cases of the omicron variant during initial screenings that began Sunday.

Residents were asked to remain where they are until the results of all the nucleic acid tests are received, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Xinhua said authorities have carried out almost 12 million tests so far, with 7.8 million samples returned. Infections were first reported on Saturday in the city that is only about an hour from Beijing, which is to host the Winter Olympics from Feb. 4.

High-speed rail service and other forms of transportation between the cities have been suspended, leading to some disruptions in supply chains, including for packaged food items sold in convenience stores.

China is imposing the strictest lockdowns ever in the run up to the Beijing Genocide Olympic Games. China’s propaganda plan is to show their superior political system has crushed the virus. That is why China has 3 cities with 20 million people under lockdown.   The lockdown in Xi’an is so severe that people are starving. This suffering is imposed so they can display a zero covid face to the world during the Olympics.

Tianjin holds special interest for me. In 1980, I visited Tianjin with a medical student group. The cultural exchange was a follow up to ping-pong diplomacy. China was still closed to the west, and an industrial city like Tianjin didn’t see many foreigners. We almost caused a riot. Walking out of our hotel one night to explore, we were surrounded by curious Chinese. I remember one older man who spoke English. He excitedly told us he had read The Call of the Wildby Jack London. His British accented English was very good, yet he apologized. He explained his English was rusty because during the Cultural Revolution, anyone who spoke English was sent to a re-education camp. Soon, the police confronted us and “suggested” we return to our hotel. As young Americans, we were slow to understand that their “suggestion” was really an order.

Our Chinese host explained to us the next day with a story. It is said that one day Chairman Mao decided that the entire Great Wall was in the wrong place needed to be moved 6 feet to the south. The next day 100 million people showed up and moved the wall. A week later, Mao said to move the wall back to the original place and 100 million people showed up the next day to move it back.

So, it’s no surprise to me that when the authorities ask all 14 million residents of Tianjin to take a covid test, they show up and get tested. And, when the authorities ask them to get re-tested 4 days later, all 14 million residents show up to get tested. That’s China under communism.
