I Should Have Turned Left
Above is a picture of the game of life that my kids and nieces and nephews were playing. They
all, like me, went right. That is where happy is – excel at school, go to college, get the
awesome job, be happy. But even in the game of life the truth mimics the actual game of life –
and it aint always so. In the game those that go left are ahead 4\5ths of the way. They have
the kids sooner, go on vacations more, buy a new car a decade before we right turners. True, if
the point of the game is to win with the most money or toys or get to the end first – for sure go
right. If you cannot stand the idea of having to wash your hands off of grease at the end of the
day, or need to have no one called boss above you then sure, right is for you. But we that went
right – many have bosses, and I have to wash my hands at the end of the day.
Basically, I need to go watch the spiritual documentary about finding peace in the workplace. Its
called Office Space. “Catching Rays, Making Bucks.

I agree and am accepting of that reprimand. And am in process of change. But the basic tenet that happiness only happens to the white collar was the ideal I was raised with, and it’s not necessarily so. I suspect there is a lot of grass greener effect here as well.
I didn’t really take it as whining. I got your subtext, and I agree with it. I have been working furiously in the hot gulf coast sun every day off the past 2 months to enclose a shed and turn it into a carport. Never having attempted such before, I have been sweating, throwing stuff, yelling, suffering smashed digits and scrapes, bug bites, and I have had far, far more fun than my best day at work. It won’t pay any bills in my case, but I certainly would recommend any inquiring youngster to learn something that people 1) actually need and 2) don’t consider to be a “right.”
